How To Combine PDF Files

There's a super-easy free tool you can use.

If you ever find yourself with the need to combine several PDFs into one single file, you may be immediately frustrated. It's not immediately obvious how to achieve what you're trying to do.

Luckily, Adobe, the creator of the PDF, offers a super-simple and free online tool that will help you combine your files in a matter of minutes.

Adobe's free online tool to combine PDFs offers a clean and simple interface that's easy to understand. The first time you use the tool, you don't need to sign in, and you can just select to download your merged file when you've completed the process.

If you want to use the tool again, you will need to sign in with your Google, Facebook, or Apple account, or by creating an account with your email address and a password. When you do sign in, you get the additional option to share your file by either generating a link or emailing it to others.

To get started, you need to get your PDF files into the main "Combine Files/Merge PDFs" box you will see at the top of the page. You can do this by dragging and dropping your PDF files into the box, or you can click the "Select Files" button to choose files you have saved on your computer.

Once you've uploaded your PDF files, it's just a matter of clicking the "Merge/Combine" option toward the top right of your screen. If you're signed in, you'll need to give the new file a name before the "Combine" button is clickable. After you've completed the combine process, you can download or share your new file.

From the completed merge screen, you'll also see a menu on the right-hand side of the page. This menu gives you further options to edit your file, including the ability to reorganize the pages, split the PDF, edit it, convert it into an alternative file format such as a JPEG or Word file, and to add a comment. Simply click on each option to make it happen.

The Difference Between Computer Image And Backup

Many computer users do not understand the difference between a computer image and a computer backup.

Generally, backups refer to saving documents, pictures, downloads, videos and music. The backups are generally made by saving to an external hard drive, but, since flash drives have increased in size, some users are backing up to them instead.

Since backups do not include programs such as Printshop, Photoshop, Microsoft Office, etc, and don't include the operating system (such as Windows, Linux, etc), if the computer crashes, all of that missing information has to be re-installed. If the user had created an image (all files and programs from the computer), all could be re-installed in one fell swoop.

Norton And Avast Announce Massive Merger Worth Over $8 Billion

NortonLifeLock will acquire Avast as part of a merger valued between $8.1 billion and $8.6 billion. The acquisition combines two of the best antivirus software makers. The deal will see NortonLifeLock purchase all of Avast's shares. The combined companies will have over 500 million customers. By the end of the second year following the merger, NortonLifeLock expects to reach a costs savings of approximately $280 million.

"This transaction is a huge step forward for consumer Cyber Safety and will ultimately enable us to achieve our vision to protect and empower people to live their digital lives safely," says Vincent Pilette, chief executive officer of NortonLifeLock. "With this combination, we can strengthen our Cyber Safety platform and make it available to more than 500 million users. We will also have the ability to further accelerate innovation to transform Cyber Safety."

Avast's chief executive officer, Ondřej Vlček, also shares thoughts on the merger. "At a time when global cyber threats are growing, yet cyber safety penetration remains very low, together with NortonLifeLock, we will be able to accelerate our shared vision of providing holistic cyber protection for consumers around the globe," says Vlček.

"Our talented teams will have better opportunities to innovate and develop enhanced solutions and services, with improved capabilities from access to superior data insights. Through our well-established brands, greater geographic diversification and access to a larger global user base, the combined businesses will be poised to access the significant growth opportunity that exists worldwide."

Avast shareholders will be entitled to a combination of cash considerations and newly issued shares in NortonLifeLock or choose alternative considerations.

Alan Marcus, President, called the meeting to order at 9:00AM. Members in attendance: Jim Trimboli, Bob Kenlay, Linda Tingley, Bill Balch, Don Forgette, Bob Leiner, Steve Maly, and Alan Marcus.

Secretary’s report read by Bob Kenlay. No corrections or additions necessary.

Jim Trimboli read the Treasurer's Report. The current balance is $1559.04. Bob Kenlay made a motion to give five $10 gift cards the rest of this year. Jim Trimboli seconded the motion. The board passed the motion.

Don Forgette said he was ready to give the "Cellular Internet Alternatives” at the next meeting.

New Bank-fraud Malware Called Vultur Infects Thousands Of Devices

Recently detected Android malware, some spread through the Google Play Store, uses a novel way to supercharge the harvesting of login credentials from more than 100 banking and cryptocurrency applications.

The malware, which researchers from Amsterdam-based security firm ThreatFabric are calling Vultur, is among the first Android threats to record a device screen whenever one of the targeted apps is opened. Vultur uses a real implementation of the VNC screen-sharing application to mirror the screen of the infected device to an attacker-controlled server, researchers with ThreatFabric said.

The typical modus operandi for Android-based bank-fraud malware is to superimpose a window on top of the login screen presented by a targeted app. The “overlay,” as such windows are usually called, appears identical to the user interface of the banking app, giving victims the impression they’re entering their credentials into a trusted piece of software. Attackers then harvest the credentials, enter them into the app running on a different device, and withdraw money.

“Banking threats on the mobile platform are no longer only based on well-known overlay attacks, but are evolving into RAT-like malware, inheriting useful tricks like detecting foreground applications to start screen recording,” ThreatFabric researchers wrote of the new Vultur approach in a post.
They continued: This brings the threat to another level, as such features open the door for on-device fraud, circumventing detection based on phishing MO’s that require fraud to be performed from a new device: With Vultur fraud can happen on the infected device of the victim. These attacks are scalable and automated since the actions to perform fraud can be scripted on the malware backend and sent in the form of sequenced commands.
Vultur, like many Android banking trojans, relies heavily on accessibility services built into the mobile OS. When first installed, Vultur abuses these services to obtain the permissions required to work. To do this, the malware uses an overlay taken from other malware families. From then on, Vultur monitors all requests that trigger the accessibility services.

The malware uses the services to detect requests that come from a targeted app. The malware also uses the services to prevent deletion of the app via traditional measures. Specifically, whenever the user tries to access the app details screen in the Android settings, Vultur automatically clicks the back button. That blocks the user from accessing the uninstall button. Vultur also hides its icon.

Another way the malware remains stealthy: trojanized apps that install it are full-featured programs that actually provide real services, such as fitness tracking or two-factor authentication. Despite the cloaking attempts, however, the malware provides at least one telltale sign that it’s running whatever trojanized app installed Vultur will appear in the Android notification panel as projecting the screen.

Once installed, Vultur starts the screen recording, using VNC implementation from a well-known Android app (Ars is leaving out the name, but it's included in the ThreatFabric report). To provide remote access to the VNC server running on the infected device, the malware uses ngrok, an app that uses an encrypted tunnel to expose local systems hidden behind firewalls to the public Internet.

The malware is installed by a trojanized app known as a dropper. So far, ThreatFabric researchers have found two trojanized apps in Google Play that install Vultur. They had combined installations of about 5,000, leading the researchers to estimate that the number of Vultur infections is numbered in the thousands. Unlike most Android malware, which relies on third-party droppers, Vultur uses a custom dropper that has come to be called Brunhilda.

“This dropper and Vultur are both developed by the same threat actor group,” ThreatFabric researchers wrote. “The choice of developing its own private trojan, instead of renting third-party malware, displays a strong motivation from this group, paired with the overall high level of structure and organization present in the bot as well as the server code.”

The researchers found that Brunhilda was used in the past to install different Android banking malware known as Alien. In all, the researchers estimate Brunhilda has infected more than 30,000 devices. The researchers based the estimate on malicious apps previously available in the Play Store, some with more than 10,000 installations each, as well as figures from third-party markets.

Vultur is programmed to record screens when any of 103 Android banking or cryptocurrency apps are running in the foreground. Italy, Australia, and Spain were the countries with the most banking institutions targeted.

Besides banking and cryptocurrency apps, the malware also harvests credentials for Facebook, Facebook-owned WhatsApp messenger, TikTok, and Viber Messenger. Credential harvesting for these apps occurs through traditional keylogging, although the ThreatFabric post didn’t explain why.

While Google has removed all Play Market apps known to contain Brunhilda, the company’s track record suggests that new trojanized apps will probably appear. Android users should only install apps that provide useful services and, even then, only apps from well-known publishers, when at all possible. People should also pay close attention to user ratings and app behavior for indications of malice.

Tesla's New Adapter Will Let Others Use It's Fast Charging Stations

Electric cars are on the rise in the United States. Nearly half of all car-buying adults are open to the idea of bringing a battery-powered vehicle into their home, and automakers like Ford are reporting triple-digit sales increases of battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. But finding a charger on the road, which can be challenging, may soon become easier thanks to electric automaker Tesla: The company recently pledged to open its proprietary charging network to other electric vehicles in late 2021.

While most electric car charging is done in the home, commuters and travelers often need to charge on the go, and will then have to find public EV chargers along their route. There’s just one catch: the charging infrastructure in the United States is still very young, and coming across a place to plug in isn’t as easy as finding a gas station, at least not yet.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk first announced that Tesla was planning to open its network to non-Tesla vehicles via a tweet on July 20, and later expanded upon the idea during the manufacturer’s quarterly earnings call on July 26.

“We’re currently thinking it’s a real simple thing where you just download the Tesla app and you go to Supercharger,” said Musk, referring to the company’s line of fast chargers. “And you just indicate which stall you’re in. So you plug in your car, even if it’s not Tesla.”

Currently, all Tesla Superchargers in the US use a proprietary inlet connector with a form factor that can only be used to charge Tesla-branded vehicles. Other EVs on the market use an open standard like the Combined Charging System (CCS) or less common CHAdeMO connector. This means that the Supercharger inlet cannot be physically inserted into a non-Tesla vehicle to charge it.

The solution involves a small new piece of hardware. Musk says that the company will start selling a Tesla-designed adapter which sits between the car and the Supercharger, which will allow owners of non-Tesla vehicles to use the Supercharging network along with the Tesla app to charge their vehicle.

The expansion of charging networks in the U.S. is reaching a critical tipping point. As more automakers move towards electrification, the need for additional chargers is predicted to grow at an astronomical rate. In fact, President Joseph Biden recently called for providers to reach a milestone of a half-million chargers installed by 2030 and set out to establish an infrastructure funding bill to make the target a reality.

But recent bipartisan compromises seek to cut the available funding for EV charging infrastructure expansion in half, meaning that charging may get a bit more crowded before it gets better. Since Tesla controls a large portion of the total chargers deployed today, allowing other vehicles to charge on the Supercharging network could ease the crunch.

There are currently 43,525 public charging stations across the nation, according to the US Department of Energy. However, only 5,260 of those stations actually have DC Fast Charging, which is necessary for EV drivers to quickly top off their battery mid-trip, readily available. The remaining 88 percent of charging stations have slower charging speeds that are meant to charge an EV’s batteries over longer periods of time, such as overnight at a hotel. That’s obviously not ideal if you just need some quick juice.

Confusingly, a charging station refers to a physical location that usually has multiple individual chargers where multiple vehicles can charge near one another simultaneously, like how a gas station has multiple pumps. For example, a total of 18,875 fast chargers exist, but they are distributed amongst those 5,260 stations.

The total number of chargers described by the Department of Energy includes 1,074 fast charging stations built by Tesla. And the good news is that each of those has approximately five times the number of average chargers per station, 10 cars as opposed to a non-Tesla station’s average of 2 cars. This means that Tesla’s Supercharging network makes up around 20 percent of all stations and over 56 percent of all total chargers on all networks today, but only Tesla vehicles can charge at these locations. With Tesla offering to open its charging stations up to other automakers, the ability to charge away from home becomes significantly easier for owners of vehicles made by other brands.

This proclamation was met with mixed feelings from Tesla owners, who fear that opening the network up to non-Tesla vehicles will cause even more congestion. Tesla’s charging stalls have appeared online during busy travel times like Thanksgiving, when lines overflowed out of parking lots while vehicles waited for chargers.

Musk says that Tesla plans to address this by adjusting the network’s pricing, increasing the cost to charge when the network is “jam-packed” in order to deter unnecessary charging. Likewise, vehicles that charge more slowly due to technological constraints will also face higher costs, because the longer a vehicle charges, the longer the wait for another vehicle becomes. This is also expected to improve as Tesla continues to aggressively roll out additional Superchargers to offset the increasing amount of cars on the road.

As of now, Tesla hasn’t revealed an exact timeline for when it plans to expand its charging network to non-Tesla vehicles. However, Musk estimates that it will begin rolling it out before the end of 2021. Much like hot dogs and buns, the number of electric vehicles on the road will never quite be equal to the number of public chargers. That isn’t necessarily a problem, especially as the primary means of juicing up is accomplished at home. And as the network continues to grow relative to the number of new EVs on the road in the next decade, pain points like congestion will hopefully become a thing of the past.
