My cell phone photos are poor

Answer Man

I am using an LG Tracfone to take pictures. The quality seems poor, but my neighbor uses the same phone and her pictures are great. What could be wrong?

Inexpensive phones, that do not have image stabilization are subject to poor quality if the camera moves at all while the shot is being taken. You might have to brace your arm or use a tripod to get a good picture.

Windows 10 hangs on install

Answer Man

I upgraded to Windows 10, and it seems to have installed, but appears to just hang on some screens.

I suspect that the computer is in need of some of the latest upgrades. Click Start, Settings, Update and Security. See if updates are ready for installation. It may take some time before the updates start. The updates should solve the hanging problem.

How do I revert to Windows 7?

Answer Man

I understand that I can revert to Windows 7 if I don't like Windows 10. How can I do it?

PC World states:

You’re allowed to roll back to your previous Windows version for 30 days after upgrading to Windows 10. Simply open the Start menu and head to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery. If you’re eligible to downgrade, you’ll see an option that says “Go back to Windows 7” or “Go back to Windows 8.1,” depending on which operating system you upgraded from. Simply click the Get started button and go along for the ride.

What features would you look for in a new computer?

Answer Man

I want to purchase a new laptop, but I have no idea what features to look for. I am willing to spend up to $600. Can you help me decide?

Look for a computer with 4 to 8 GB of RAM (memory). More is better. Find out what CPU the unit has and then look at the following site to see how the chip stacks up against others in it's class. I'd stay away from the low end in each category. I would opt for a solid-state hard drive. SSDs are faster and more reliable. If you can purchase a 500 GB drive and stay within the price range, do so. If not, buy a 250 GB SSD.

How to use Team Viewer

Answer Man

During the Club meeting regarding favorite apps, you discussed controlling a remote computer using Team Viewer. Can you summarize the steps for use of the program?

Sure, go to Teamviewer.com and click Download. Click on the downloaded file to install the program. Have your remote partner go through the same steps. Each of you must click on the program icon to start TeamViewer. Have your partner tell you his ID and insert it in the Partner ID blank. Then enter his password when prompted. You will see your partner's screen and you can control it as if it were your own.

Is it time for a new router?

Answer Man

My router is several years old. When ever I try to watch a video, the picture hangs and then restarts. Would a new router solve my problem?

Intermittent video (buffering) is generally caused by slow Internet connections or because old routers can't handle the speed. Routers are classified by letters: B,G,N and AC. I suspect that you have an old G router. N routers are 10 x as fast. You do not need to get the AC router, but I think your situation will improve greatly if you purchase an N router. While you are at it, pay a few bucks more to get a dual-band router (helps avoid interference).

Why is my inkjet dead?

Answer Man

I have an inkjet printer that is just 2 years old. It suddenly stopped printing. I replaced all of the ink cartridges and still got blank pages. Could the printer be dead in under 2 years of usage?

If the paper feeds after you give the printer the print command, and the ink is new, the print head is probably clogged. The first troubleshooting step should be to follow the Tools-Clean print head menu to see if that solves the problem. If that doesn't work, try it again. If that doesn't work, try dribbling a few drops of alcohol into the screen below the cartridge. If the printer still won't print, buy a new printer. Print head repair can cost more than a new printer.

File history finishes too quickly

Answerman

I attended the recent computer class about backing up my computer, and followed the directions for a Windows 10 computer. The machine went into File History but finished in a couple of seconds. What could be wrong?

Most likely, you have very few files that the program tried to back up. File History backs up documents, downloads, music and photos. If you only have a couple of files, they should be backed up in seconds. If you have hundreds of files, the back up may take several minutes. After the first backup, subsequent backups will be fast since they only back up changes since the last backup (it's called incremental backup).

My inkjet printer won't print

Answerman

My printer driver installed without difficulty. When I try to print, the paper comes out blank. The cartridges are new. What do you suggest I do to get the printer working?

It sounds to me like the print heads are clogged. Most printers have a utility to clean the heads. Scroll through the printer menu until you see the print head cleaning utility. You may have to run it a couple of times for the ink to get through.

My new car screen is a mass of fingerprints

Answerman

My new car has a large computer screen. It is covered with fingerprints, and it's driving me crazy. How do you suggest I clean the screen?

My advice is to avoid having fingerprints on the screen by using a computer stylus. I keep a stylus in my car's cup holder so it is readily available and never use my fingers to touch the screen.

I need more USB ports

Answer Man

I just bought a new laptop and didn't realize it only had two USB ports. I need to plug in 4 devices that have USB connections. Is there anything I can do?

You can purchase a USB hub. Most hubs have ports for 4 devices, but you can purchase hubs with many more ports. I have one that takes 10 devices. The hubs are inexpensive. I suggest that you look on e-bay for some of the cheapest ones around.

Router won't accept password

Answer Man

I forgot my router password and decided to reset my router. Then I entered the router password listed on the back of the router, but the password wasn't accepted. What could be wrong?

I have encountered some routers that list both a password and a passphrase, and even though they ask for a password, they really mean the passphrase.

How can I set programs as defaults?

Answer Man

How can I set programs as default programs?

First, for those that don't know, a default program is the one that would normally open. Let's say you have 3 browsers but you want Google Chrome to open up unless you choose a different browser. Chrome would be the default browser. To set defaults, click on Control Panel, Programs, Set Your Default Programs. Then select each program you would like as the default program.

I can't turn on Windows Defender

Answer Man

I am using Windows 10. I clicked on the message center and it said that Windows Defender has been turned off. I tried to turn it on, but it wouldn't let me. What's happening?

Microsoft turns off Defender if another anti-malware program has been installed. I suspect that you have installed Malewarebytes or a similar anti-malware program.

Is a free program available to wipe hard drives?

Answer Man

I am scrapping an old computer but need to wipe the hard drive because it contains some sensitive information. I don't want to have to pay someone to do it, and don't want to go to the expense and learning curve of purchasing a wiping program. Have you a suggestion?

Download CCleaner https://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download. Select Tools and then Disk Wiper. Make certain you select the correct drive to wipe and run the program. The result won't be a military grade wipe, but it should do the job for you.

How is the size of an e-reader measured?

Answer Man

I need to buy a case for my e-reader. It's a Kindle Fire HDX that I thought was 7". I know they measure such things on a diagonal, but when I measure the Kindle, It appears to be 8 and 1/2 inches. How do they measure the darn things?

The correct way to measure is to turn on the device and then measure the diagonal length of the lit screen. I think you will find that it is 7". So, purchase a case for a 7" Kindle. Be careful in ordering because some changes have been made in the cases from year to year, and you want one that will fit. Some cases have cutouts to accommodate speakers, power and volume buttons.

How can I delete Windows.old?

Answer Man

When I upgraded Windows a file called Windows.old was created.  Do I need the file? If I don't need it, how do I erase the file?

Windows old is used by Windows 10 to revert back to Windows 7 if you elect to do so (the reversion must take place within 30 days). If it is past 30 days or if you have no plans to revert, you can get rid of the file. To do so, type "disk cleanup" in the search box and then click on the result of the search. Select Windows.old and select the box to permanently delete and click O.K.

What's wrong with Windows XP?

Answer Man

Many users, including me, like Windows XP. What's wrong with an old system that works?

I agree that XP was a fine operating system, but I think you know that Microsoft has stopped supporting XP, and Google just announced that the Chrome browser will no longer support XP or Vista.

You could also drive a Model T, which was a fine car in its day, but I think it would be much wiser to go with a newer car.

Cheap upgrade to Windows 10

Answer Man

I know that July 29th is the deadline for upgrades from Windows 7 and 8 to Windows 10. My computer runs Windows Vista. Could I install a cheap copy of Windows 7 and then upgrade before the deadline?

You might do that. I have seen legal copies of Windows 7 for sale under $30. Be prepared, however, for a lot of work. You'll have to install 7, go through many updates and then install 10. If you do some searching, you might find Windows 10 for under $70, and by using it, you could avoid some hassle.

Library has cut back on e-books

Answer Man

I used to use the Marion County Library to access e-books for my Kindle. Recently, I have noticed they have far fewer e-books. Do you know why, and is there anything I can do about the situation?

The Marion County Library receives funding after many other county services and, as I understand it, has had to cut back on services. The library dropped the Overdrive book service, and their Access 360 service has far fewer e-books. Many users are heading to Micanopy (Alachua Library System) to become members. There is no charge for Marion County residents and Alachua does subscribe to Overdrive.
