Windows 10 not compatible with bios

Answer Man

I clicked on the taskbar icon to install Windows 10 and received a message that Windows 10 was not compatible with the bios. Is there anything I can do about the problem?

Why do users need recovery disks?

Answer Man

I have heard you say that computer users should create recovery media. I don't understand what the media does?

Recovery media (generally DVDs or flash drives) enables users to boot a computer when all other efforts to start the machine fail. The media helps in troubleshooting problems, restoring the computer to an earlier point and in  re-installing the operating system if necessary.

In order to create recovery disks or flash drives, simply type "recovery" in the search box and follow the recovery directions.

Why dual boot Windows 10 and Windows 7?

Answer Man

A member of the computer club asked whether a computer could be dual booted with Windows 7 and Windows 10. You replied that it was possible. Why would anyone want to dual boot?

Most often, users dual boot machines because an older operating system will run legacy (older) programs, but the user would like to run a newer operating system most of the time. Dual booting enables them to accomplish both goals.

I have heard that experts are advising those computer users who have Quick Time to show videos should uninstall the program immediately. What's the reason?

Speed-up a computer by disabling transparency

What is transparency in Windows 10?

Transparency is the ability to make the start menu, taskbar and action center translucent. Some people like the feature and others see no point to it. Users can make their computers perform a little faster by turning off transparency. To do so, click Start, Settings, Personalization, Colors, then select "Make start taskbar and action center transparent" and click to Off.

My tablet can't access the Internet

Answer Man

I used to be able to access the Internet using my tablet, but now I see a message that the Internet is not available. I followed Decca's suggestions of unplugging and re-plugging in the modem and router, but that doesn't work. Have you any ideas what might be wrong?

Sometimes, users put their tablets in airplane mode which disables Wi-Fi. If that applies in your case, simply go into the device settings and turn off airplane mode.

How long does it take to install Windows 10?

Answer Man

How long does it take to download and install Windows 10?

Download time depends upon Internet speed. Decca's default Internet download speed is 5 Mbps. At that speed, and a computer having minimum specifications for Windows 10, expect the download to take a couple of hours. Installation will probably take another hour, so plan on a total of approximately 3 hours if your Internet and computer specs are minimum. If, on the other hand, you have 20 Mbps Internet speed and a computer with a top processor and lots of memory, the whole process could be complete in half an hour.

How do I open a program with administrative rights?

Answer Man

Many programs will not let the user make changes unless the user has administrative rights. I signed on as an administrator, but I still see the nag about needing administrative rights. Is there an easy way to open a program with those rights?

Hold down the CTRL and Shift keys as you click on the program icon.

What's the difference between a tablet and an e-reader?

Answer Man

What is the difference between a tablet computer and an e-reader?

Some e-readers, such as the Kindle Paper-White, are only designed for reading books and cannot access the Internet. Tablet computers can access the Internet, and may be able to act like e-readers, but are not designed with that as their main focus, and therefore may lack some functionality as an e-reader. There are e-readers, such as the Kindle Fire, which are tablets, but which have a primary focus as e-readers. Users must decide which functions are important to them and should purchase the devices on that basis.

Please explain how to download and install a program

Answer Man

I don't understand the process of downloading and installing a program. Can you explain it in simple terms?

Let us suppose that you would like to add the office suite of programs called LibreOffice to your computer. You would type in the address libreoffice.org and press the enter key on the keyboard. When the program's site appears, click on "Download". The program will be transferred from the LibreOffice site to your computer and will probably appear in the computer's download folder. Find the file that has been downloaded and click on it. The program will install in your computer and an icon will appear on the desktop.

I can't edit a scanned document

Answer Man

I just scanned a Microsoft Word document, but I'm unable to edit the document. How come?

Scans are normally made as pictures and can't be edited. In order to be able to edit a scan, the scan has to be produced with OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software. If your printer did not come with OCR software, you will have to buy the software from a vendor and install it into your computer.

Streaks of color appear in prints

Answer Man

I just replaced the ink cartridges in my printer, but the prints show stripes down the page. What could be wrong?

It sounds as though the print head is clogged. You can try the built in utility to clean the print heads. You might have to try it twice. If that doesn't work you can try cleaning the print head with a swab and alcohol (if the head is accessible). If neither solution works, it may be time for a new printer.

Preferences in types of flash drives

Answer Man

I see that there are many types of flash drives available. Do you prefer one type over another?

I prefer the Lexar jackknife style. The drives are easy to insert and remove, and they light up when active. I do not like the drives with separate caps (easy to lose) or the type with a thumb slide. The thumb slide type seem to retract when ever you try to insert the drive into USB ports.

Can I put erased pictures back on camera card?

Do I need a new computer?

Answer Man

I have read many articles regarding whether and when a person should buy a new computer. There seems to be widely different views on the subject. What's your take?

I currently own 5 computers. The newest of those computers is 6 years old. I have converted 5 of the machines to Windows 10 and one to Linux Mint. I have no need for a new computer, and you may not either.

Here's my criteria for keep or buy: If you are planning to use Windows, the computer should have a minimum of 2 Gigabytes of Memory. The hard drive should be large enough so that your files and the operating system do not take more than 75% of the hard drive capacity. The processor should be fast enough so that you are satisfied with the computer speed.

If you are using a Linux or Chrome operating system, the computer should have at least 1 GB of memory.

What happens when there is no backup?

Answer Man

My computer crashed, and I have not made a backup. If I can't recover the data, I'm in deep trouble. I have tax returns, Quicken records, medical records and thousands of photos that are valuable to me. What can be done about the problem?

I think you now know why I am a nag about performing backups. Unfortunately, those who backup are in the minority. Recently, a large hospital's computer system was hacked by ransomware. The hospital, surprisingly, had no back-up. They ended up paying $17,000 to get their records back.

It is sometimes possible to recover data from a crashed computer. However, recovery companies often charge an arm and a leg to recover data. It appears to me that you have lost your data for good, but you might have a technician look at the computer to ascertain if there is a chance of data recovery.

How does Tesla update their software?

Answer Man

You recently gave a talk about Tesla cars in which you stated that the Tesla company frequently updates the software that runs the car. Do you have to bring the car in for service to get the updates?

The updates are done by 3G phone and Wi-Fi. Tesla sends out a notice when an update is available. The notice appears on the car's display screen. The car owner selects a time for the update when the car will not be in use. The update is usually done at night when the car is parked in a garage. When the update is finished, a note to that effect appears on the display. The owner can than click on the Tesla logo on the display to read the release notes regarding the update. The most recent update discussed the summon feature and listed the directions for use. By following directions, the owner could have the car open the garage door, back out of the garage and stop where directed without the owner being in the car.

Computer running slow after upgrade

Answer Man

Right after I updated my computer to Windows 10, the computer slowed to a crawl. Sometimes I can't get the start screen to show up for several minutes. What do you suggest?

Either Windows did not install correctly, or your computer has a virus or some sort of file corruption. The best procedure is to reset your computer. A reset should correct the problem but you will lose programs that you have added to the computer. Your personal files should be okay. To reset, click Start, Settings, Update and Security, Recovery and then Reset. The process may take a long time.

Correct way to shut down computer

Answer Man

What is the correct way to shut down a computer?

In Windows 10, click the start button in the lower left of the screen, select power and shut down. You don't want to push the power button on the computer unless the computer is completely locked-up and there is no other way to exit.

Do I need a faster speed for Netflix?

Answer Man

I am thinking of subscribing to Netflix. I currently have Decca's 5 MB Internet Service. Will that do?

It is generally thought that you need a minimum of 5 MB service to stream movies. When you subscribe to 5 MBPS, that is the maximum you can receive. You will normally get much slower speed. Decca's next plateau is the 10 MB service which currently costs $15 more per month. When Internet speeds are too low, you will experience a lot of buffering.

I suggest that you read the following article from Consumer Reports:

Should I switch to Windows 10?

Answer Man

My computer runs Windows 7. I am very happy with the operating system. Is there any reason for me to upgrade to Windows 10?

I can think of several reasons. Windows 10 is over 14% faster than Windows 7. The upgrade is free until July 29. Microsoft is trying to force everyone to switch to 10 and is therefore slowing their support for Windows 7. If you decide to sell your computer, more people will be attracted to a computer running Windows 10. There are many new features such as file history backup and system imaging that are superior to similar programs in Windows 7.

Saturday, April 2, 2016

How long will the Windows 10 upgrade be free?

Answer Man

What is the deadline for a free upgrade to Windows 10?

Microsoft will let you upgrade a Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 computer for free until July 29, 2016. After that date you will have to pay for a copy of Windows 10. The home edition retail price from Microsoft will be $119, although some sites have been selling Windows 10 for as little as $79.

The computer backup didn't include programs

Answer Man

I have always backed up my computer. Yesterday the computer crashed, and when I restored my files to the new hard drive, the programs weren't there. What did I do wrong?

Backups normally include documents, downloads, photos and music. They do not include programs. If you want to save a copy of everything in your computer (all of the above plus the operating system and all programs), you must create a system image. The process is similar to backing up but takes much longer.
