Internet has slowed to a crawl

Answer Man

My wife was using her tablet computer. My grandson was using his laptop, and I was trying to download a file when the Internet slowed to a crawl. What could be wrong?

Each of the devices has to share the same bandwidth. The more items you add, the slower the connection will be.

USB camera not working

Answer Man

I plugged the USB camera into a hub, and now the camera doesn't work.

Unless the hub is a powered hub, there probably isn't enough power to run the camera. Plug the camera directly into a USB port. Rear ports generally supply more power than front ports.

I tried to install Windows 10, but the computer got stuck in an updating cycle. It would update and then remove the updates, and it kept on doing that.

To stop that cycle, type CMD in the search box. Type "net stop wuauserv". Wait a few minutes. Type "net start wuauserv".

If this does not work the 1st time, repeat it 2-3 times.

Quick way to get rid of ransomware

Answer Man

My computer is infected with ransomware. Is there a quick way to get it off my computer?

A lot depends upon how well the hackers have locked up the computer. If the hack is weak, you can press CTRL, ALT and DEL at the same time, click Task Manager and stop any running process. Then you should have control over your computer. If the hack is strong, you may have to reset the computer or do a complete recovery. Look through the labels on this site for recovery to see how to reset the computer.

What type of paper must I buy for my printer?

Answer Man

I just bought a new printer, but I don't know what kind of paper to buy. Have you any suggestions?

Most printers will print on everything from light weight copy paper to card stock. Check your printer manual, however, as some printers will not accept card stock over specific weights. Much has to do with the design of the paper path through the printer. Printers that have a straight through paper path will generally accept heavy card stock.

Do I need a router?

Answer Man

I keep hearing about routers, but I don't know whether or not I need one. Can you explain the need for a router?

In order to connect to the Internet, you need a modem. The modem can connect directly to your computer via an Ethernet cable. But let's suppose you want to buy a tablet computer or wireless printer. If so, you need a router. Router's broadcast wireless signals to various devices. However, if you are happy with your computer, don't need a tablet, and don't plan on wireless printers, then, you have no need for a router.

Are tax software programs reliable?

Answer Man

Are tax preparation programs safe and reliable?

I can't speak for all of them, but I have used Turbo-Tax for many years and have always found it accurate and easy to use. H & R Block and Tax Act programs also have excellent reputations. One recent complaint about Turbo-Tax was that the maker, Intuit, tried to up-sell the program to have you purchase a more powerful program than you needed. I complained when that happened to me, and the company issued a refund for the difference.

Why is my laptop running so hot?

Answer Man

I have a Toshiba laptop that is running very hot. What are the likely causes?

Check to see if the fan is turning. If it is, is it dirty? If so, blow out the opening using a can of compressed air. Always run the laptop on a hard surface. I know some people run the computer while it is sitting on their laps. I know their called laptops, but you never want to run one while it is sitting in your lap. Other causes of high heat include the drying out of the thermal cement that fastens the CPU to the heat sink.
