Does Windows 10 contain an anti-virus program?

Answer Man

Is it true that an anti-virus program is built in to Windows 10? Do I need to buy another anti-virus program?

Windows 10 comes with the Windows Defender anti-virus program. Adding another anti-virus program defeats the purpose. You should not have more than one anti-virus program. You can disable Windows Defender and add another program if you wish, but I see no point in doing so.

My computer screen goes blank after 10 minutes

Answer Man

My computer works fine, but the screen shuts off after 10 minutes.  Do you have any idea what might be wrong?

Of course there could be many reasons such as a thermal problem, bad sector on the hard drive, bad capacitors in the monitor, etc., but, I'm willing to bet that your power settings are set to put the computer in sleep mode after 10 minutes. Go into the control panel, hardware, and power settings. Adjust the power so that it never shuts down.

Avoiding fingerprints on an all-in-one computer

Answer Man

I bought an all-in-one computer, and it's driving me crazy. There are fingerprints everywhere. I can't clean the screen every five minutes. Do you have a solution?

I would use a computer stylus whenever possible. Styluses seem to work better than fingers, and they don't leave any prints. I even use a stylus in my car in order to keep the display clean. It works like a charm.

Is Windows 10 still free?

Answer Man

Is Windows 10 still free?

Windows 10 is a free upgrade for those who currently have Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 and will remain so until July 29, 2016. The current price which will probably carry over after July 29th is $119 for the home premium edition. I advise all who qualify for the free edition to upgrade now. Windows 10 is a fine operating system

Say Goodbye To Picasa

Google is abandoning Picasa, its photo editor and sharing service.

The desktop application will no longer be supported by Google beginning March 15, 2016, according to a company blog post, and in May the company will archive users' Picasa Web Albums.

A blog post from Google Photos head Anil Sabharwal said the company is retiring Picasa to focus on developing "one service that provides more functionality and works across mobile and desktop, rather than divide our efforts across two different products."

Google Photos was launched in mid-2015. It allows anyone with a Google account to automatically sync photos between their mobile device, laptop and a storage cloud with unlimited free space.

Google said the desktop photo editor will still be available for download, but it will no longer offer updates to keep the program compatible with new operating systems. Everything users have stored in Picasa Web Albums will be available on Google Photos, the company said.

"You will still be able to view, download, or delete your Picasa Web Albums, you just won't be able to create, organize or edit albums (you would now do this in Google Photos)," the post said.

Picasa was one of the first widely used photo editing programs on the market, and it was one of the first to offer easy uploads and online storage.

It was set up in 2002 with the help of entrepreneur Bill Gross's Idealab, and it was acquired by Google in 2004.

But Picasa's popularity has faded drastically, and Google Photos offers much of the same editing options and facial recognition technology.

Still, posts on a discussion forum indicated there are some loyal Picasa users who aren't eager to make the switch. "Picasa editing tools are user friendly. Adjusting contrast, cropping etc. The Google Plus tools are cumbersome, not as intuitive and lack the variety," one Google user wrote.

Another asked Google to make Picasa open source so that anyone can edit its code and offer an updated version, saying "the community can maintain it."

Why would I want to use a virtual machine?

Answer Man

What is a virtual machine and why would I want one?

A virtual machine lets you run an operating system within another operating system. Let's imagine that you are using Windows 10, but you would like to try Linux Mint. However, you don't want to replace one system with the other. You could install a virtual machine such as VMware within Windows and have Mint run without changing the Windows system.

Difference between back-up and image

Answer Man

When I perform a computer back-up, am I backing up Windows 10 or just my files?

First you need to understand two terms, back-up and imaging. A back-up normally saves copies of documents, photos, and downloads. It does not save Windows 10 or any other operating system. In order to save the operating system and all the programs on your computer, you need to create a system image. See the answer to my next post to learn how to create an image.
